Gartner recently published the 2021 Magic Quadrant for Cloud Database Management Systems and Cockroach Labs has been included in it for the first time. This is a major milestone and is indicative of the momentum behind Cockroach Labs, the maturity of CockroachDB as a cloud DBMS for transactional use cases, and an increasing interest in distributed transactional DBMSs in the market.
Who makes the Magic Quadrant?
Only 20 vendors made it onto the Magic Quadrant this year and inclusion is based on a variety of factors including market momentum, capabilities, and customer reviews. We are incredibly thankful that our customers helped demonstrate these key factors by submitting thoughtful reviews of CockroachDB in Gartner Peer Insights.
The MQ — along with the corresponding report, “Critical Capabilities for Cloud DBMS for Operational Use Cases” — helps organizations understand the database landscape through insightful analysis across four use cases – Traditional Transactions, Augmented Transaction Processing (also known as “translytical”), Stream/Event Processing, and Operational Intelligence (including analytics and BI). CockroachDB landed in the top ten of cloud databases for traditional transactional use cases and Gartner rated CockroachDB high for consistency and multicloud/hybrid deployment capabilities.
Where is Cockroach Labs on the Magic Quadrant?
We are now on the board, and our placement as a “niche” solution is just the beginning. We believe the ideal database for tomorrow’s applications is cloud-native and elastically scales (up and down) based on actual usage. The cost of the ideal database is tied directly to your success and is free to get started. The ideal database speaks SQL and integrates with the rest of your data architecture. The ideal database is always correct, always consistent, always on and available. You’ll never have to size the ideal database, update it or be concerned about backups. The ideal database lives anywhere and everywhere in the world, so your data is always close to your user. For developers, the ideal database will simply become a SQL API in the cloud.
This is our vision of the future of the cloud DBMS and we very much look forward to working more closely with our customers to deliver on this vision as we move “up and to the right”.
