Last month we introduced our new CockroachDB Cloud Platform, which we’ve evolved to include the new Standard plan that delivers cost effective scalability with enterprise-grade security. As part of the new platform, we’re also making improvements to CockroachDB Cloud pricing to better align with industry standards and ensure our customers only pay for what they use. Our ultimate goal is to be able to deliver the most efficient, flexible managed service platform for all of your workloads.
Based on customer feedback, we're updating how we measure and charge for usage of CockroachDB Cloud Standard and Advanced plans to help you increase control of your overall spend:
We’re reducing compute pricing, benefiting all Standard and Advanced plans across all customers.
By unbundling data transfer, backups, and CDC from existing compute prices, you now only pay for what you use.
Last month, we increased backup flexibility to allow you to control backup frequency and retention to flexibly meet your compliance and disaster recovery needs. You can scale beyond the current cloud defaults to improve RPO for your most important workloads and scale back for your test and dev environments to reduce costs.
There are no changes to storage pricing.
Our Basic plan remains the same, with the exception of backups, which will be reduced to a daily frequency.
Starting on December 1, 2024, the improved pricing model will go into effect for new customers, who create an account on or after this date, and upon renewal for existing annual and multi-year contract customers. Existing pay-as-you-go customers (e.g., monthly by credit card) will default to the new pricing model on December 1.
What’s changing and why
Our updated pricing is transparent, aligned with industry standards, and reflects only the value we are providing to you based on how you use CockroachDB Cloud. Separating new line item costs from compute ensures you will not pay for functionality you don’t need–for example, you might start small in early dev/test or production use that doesn’t require backups.
CockroachDB Cloud Standard and Advanced Plans
Data transfer, backup, and changefeed charges will be calculated based on your usage:
Data Transfer: Data transfer usage pricing includes same-region egress, cross-region egress, and public internet egress. While using CockroachDB same-region cluster networking is free, we will pass egress charges on as they are incurred, calculated using published AWS, Azure and GCP prices as applicable. For cross-region egress, our geo-based data placement capabilities will be charged starting at $0.01 per GiB.
Backup: We offer both self-managed and managed backup options with flexible RPO and retention period. While we do not charge for basic restore, managed backups will be priced by backup frequency with volume-based pricing discounts, and you can now set your backup frequency and retention at the cluster level. This means you can easily increase backup frequency for Tier 0 applications while reducing RPO or turning off backups completely for test workloads. Similarly, you can now control your retention period, only pay for backup storage when it meets your disaster recovery or compliance needs.
Changefeeds (CDC): Many customers use CockroachDB Cloud as part of their broader data infrastructure ecosystem, and CDC is used to keep track of database changes and instantly replicate them to other downstream systems without relying on additional tools such as Debezium. Changefeeds are priced by data watched hourly and with volume-based pricing discounts as clusters accrue usage.
You will be able to view any data transfer, backups and CDC changes as new line items in the billing page of the CockroachDB Cloud console. For our current annual and multi-year contract customers, the console will continue to display usage without prices or corresponding costs through the remainder of your contract term.
