The RoachFest24 procession continues! We are highlighting all of the best presentations from RoachFest24 so far, from mobile game development to order and inventory management. If these revelations excite you, make sure to register for RoachFest NYC – coming up on September 26!

Today we hear from the team at Superbet, a sports betting platform operating across Europe that has scaled to over $1 billion in revenue. In this highly regulated industry, data integrity, scalability, and multi-region capabilities are a must. Read on to learn about how and why Superbet successfully executed a multi-step migration: first from an on-prem NoSQL database to on-prem CockroachDB, and then to CockroachDB, self-hosted on AWS.

In this technical deep dive, Sergej Jakovljev, Senior Site Reliability Engineer at Superbet, and Ivan Hrastinski, Engineering Manager at Superbet, discussed their journey with CockroachDB from on-prem to the cloud.

To kick off the discussion, Jakovljev shared background on Superbet and how the team started with CockroachDB on-prem. Operating out of 10+ locations in Europe and expanding, their business of sports betting has seen tremendous growth with no signs of stopping.

Jakovljev is part of the DevOps team, and a few years ago he was tasked with updating the data systems that stored which bets are placed, the outcomes, as well as calculating the payouts. At RoachFest24, he shared many tips that the team uncovered as they switched from an inherited on-prem system built on top of MongoDB.

Key reasons why Superbet chose CockroachDB include:

    • Guaranteed data integrity to assist with regulatory compliance

    • Cloud-agnostic database so data processing can run anywhere, even in countries without AWS availability zones

    • Horizontal scalability with automated sharding to accommodate anticipated 10x growth

Next, Hrastinski’s team took over the CockroachDB project and presentation to talk about how they optimized CockroachDB for cloud migration. In particular, Hratinski shared specific schema optimizations and recommendations.

Looking to the future, Superbet is exploring multi-tenancy as they continue to grow their business. The goal: move even faster and more efficiently in the ever-changing betting industry.

Experience the talk below for the full technical details of how CockroachDB enables Superbet to expand into new markets. Hrastinski and Jakovljev also highlight practical tips learned along the way that could help you with your CockroachDB deployment.
